Decision on bus fare hike after discussions - Minister

Transport and Community Police State Minister Dilum Amunugama said no decision has been taken on a bus fare increase with the recent rise in fuel prices.

He said that as travel restrictions are still on, much attention has not been paid to increase bus fares but it will be considered in the future.

The State Minister told media in Kandy on Saturday (12) that when people are burdened with COVID-19, it is unfair to abruptly reach conclusions and a decision to favour both bus owners, and the public will be taken if needed.

State Minister Amunugama said the government was preparing to import vehicles to state ministries and institutions using a loan obtained from Japan.” Opposition politicians were trying to mislead the people by giving wrong interpretations in this regard,” he added. He said MPs were given permits to import any vehicle during previous reigns, duty-free. “Once Gotabaya Rajapaksa became the President, steps were taken to provide an official car without issuing permits to MPs,”he said. He said a final decision has not yet been taken regarding the import of these vehicles. In such a background, the Opposition is carrying out various false propaganda to gain political advantage.
