Dharmaraja College,Kandy has appointed T.G.Nimal as the new groundsman of the College, He was the former Groundboy of Trinity College,Kandy.

Nimal has served at Trinity College for 44 years as the groundboy and he is happy to be working at this Turf Wicket. Before coming to Dharmaraja three generations of Nimal’s family have been serving as groundmen at Asgiriya International Grounds of Trinity College,Kandy.

At the Start, T.G.Marthelis Appuhamy served as groundsman from 1914 to 1964 and then his son T.G.Wickremapala was appointed as the groundsman from 1964 to 1998 and while he was working his son T.G.Nimal assisted him in his work and Nimal learnt the basics of being a groundsman. At that time the Asgiriya Graounds was upgraded to an International Stadium and when Wickremapala died T.G. Nimal was appointed as groundsman as he knew how to maintain an International Stadium. Nimal says that he has fond memories of his service as groundsman of Asgiriya International Stadium for preparation of turf wickets for more than 15 Test Matches including the World Cup tournament match between Sri Lanka and Kenya in the year 1996.

Apart from preparing the Grounds for Cricket matches, Nimal had to prepare pitches for games like Hockey, Soccer, Rugby and marking the running Track

for Athletics. Nimal is very fond of this job as he is very knowledgeable of his services as a grounds boy and he will get the necessary advice and support from the Principal, the Prefect of Games and the Masters in charge of the school in different games.
