Heavy rains bring landslide warnings for many areas

With torrential rains continuing the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) yesterday issued level 1 and 2 landslide warnings for several areas.

The NBRO issued level 1 warnings for Seethawaka DS division and surrounding areas in Colombo district, Palinda Nuwara DS in Kalutara district, Pitabeddera DS in Matara DS, Walapone DS in Nuwara-Eliya district, Elapatha, Kuruwita, Ratnapura and Kiriella DS divisions in Ratnapura district.

The NBRO issued level 2 warnings for Neluwa DS in Galle, Bulathsinhala and Ingiriya DS in Kalutara DS, Dehiowita DS in Kegalle district, Eheliyagoda, Kalawana and Ayagama in the Ratnapura district.

Authorities predicted a minor flood situation in low-lying areas of the Aththanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya valleys situated in Attanagalla, Gampaha, Minuwangoda and Ja-Ela DS divisions.

A considerable rainfall exceeding around 150 mm has been occurred in most of Middle catchment areas of Aththanagalu Oya Basin as of 9.00 AM yesterday. By analyzing the current rainfall situation and river water levels of Hydrological Stations in Aththanagalu Oya , there is a possibility of occurring a considerable flood situation (Minor Flood) in low-lying areas of Aththanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya valleys situated in Attanagalla, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, and Ja-ela D/S Divisions. It is requested to pay high attention in this regard by the residents in those area and vehicle drivers running through those areas. Disaster Management Authorities are requested to take adequate precautions in this regard (Please refer the attachment 01 for further clarifications).

The Meteorology Department said prevailing showery condition in the South-Western parts of the country is expected to continue further.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, North Western and Central provinces and in Galle and Matara districts. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere during the evening or night.Very heavy falls above 150 mm can be expected at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa and Uva provinces and in Galle, Matara and Nuwara-Eliya districts. The public were requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
