Sri Lanka approves Molnupiravir for COVID-19 treatment

The COVID-19 Technical Committee has granted approval for the use of Molnupiravir for the treatment of COVID-19 in the country, said Health Services Director General Dr. Asela Gunawardena.

He was addressing a press conference in Colombo on the COVID-19 situation in the country.

Meanwhile, State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Professor Channa Jayasumana yesterday said that arrangements are being made to use Molnupiravir developed by the US drug company Merck for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Research carried out on the first oral anti viral drug against COVID-19 has found that it is effective. Clinical trials have also shown very positive results.

It is said the number of people being hospitalized and the number of deaths due to COVID-19 can be halved, when the patients are given the correct dose. Korea and Malaysian have already placed orders for the drug.
