Cambrians take on Sebs today and tomorrow

The 71 st Annual Big Match between two prestigious educational institutions situated at the coastal belt of Western Province Moratuwa town Prince of Wales’ College (PoW) and St. Sebastian’s College will be worked off at De Soysa Stadium (formerly Tyronne Fernando Stadium) 14th and 15th January 2022 and followed by the 36th One Dayer on 17th January 2022 at the same venue.

This year these two most popular two events will be worked off according to the health regulations due to the prevailing Covid-19 and cricket crazy moratuvites will be missing two thrilling events of the city. Both Principals have agreed to abide by the health regulations and skeleton spectators will be present on all three days.

Both teams commenced playing friendly practice matches that there will be no Inter-School Matches like the previous years. The Cambrians will be captained by Dinura Fernando while his deputy will be Pasindu Pathum. The Sebs will be led by Sukitha Prasanna and his Vice-Captain will be Kalana Sandeepa. None can predict the outcome as both teams are lack practice.

The significant event of this match is that both Principals Dimuthu Deranagoda and Rev. Fr. Sanjeewa Mendis are old boys of Prince of Wales' College. This is the first-ever instance in the past 70 years that both Principals are from a single school.

Cambrians are lucky to produce both these principals from their Alma Mater and this match will be a historic and memorable one.

The next incident is the captain of Prince of Wales’ Dinura Fernando is the son of Vishwanath Fernando who captained Cambrians in 1992. This is also the first-ever instance that father and son captaining in the Cambrian Sebastianite Big Match Series which commenced in 1933. Earlier in 1914 H. F. F. Senarathne captained Prince of Wales’ while his son Nisal Senarathne captained in 1951. Marian Cooray of St. Sebastians captained his Alma Mater in 1968 while his son Dilhan Cooray captained Sebs in 2005. Both of them led their teams in the two Big Matches.
