Yupun re-writes 200m athletic record

Sri Lanka’s fastest athlete Yupun Abeykoon produced another national record clocking 20.37s (+0.1m/s) in 200m at the 12th Castiglione International Meeting in Groseto, Italy on last Sunday (22).

Abeykoon who also the South Asia’s fastest man with a personal best of 10.15 secs in the 100m event has now claim to the 200m national record of 20.68secs which was earlier held by Vinoj Suranjaya since 2018.

Yupun Abeykoon who participated at the last Tokyo Olympics already qualified to take part at the forthcoming Commonwealth Games as well as next 2023 Asian Games and he could be a medal prospect of Sri Lanka.

Earlier on last May 18 Yupun Abeykoon produced a record-breaking performance while he made a fine start to his season. The former Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa athlete who based in Italy clocked the fastest time recorded in the 100m by Sri Lankan under any conditions clocking 10.04s (+2.3m/s). Despite this performance not being considered for the records due to the wind reading being over 2.0m/s, this is the closest any Sri Lankan has come to clocking a 10.00s barrier.

The President of the Sri Lanka Athletics (SLA) Major General Palitha Fernando said the performance of the Yupun Abeykoon is very satisfied before the Commonwealth Games. Actually he is on good form and we are expecting a medal from Yupun at the Commonwealth Games as well as next year Asiin Games.

Meanwhile Kelum Perera the Vice President of Italy Olympic Committee is very helpful for Yupun Abeykoon to build up his skills in Italy.Credit should be given to his coach and to his parents said Kelum Perera in an exclusive interview with the Daily News yesterday.

Kelum Perera who is the son of former Lake House employee Kumardasa Perera is presently do fine service at Italy NOC said it's a pleasure to give assist to Sri Lankan athlete Yupun Abeykoon to build up his sports carrer.Kelum Perera is a keen sports promoter in Italy also the present secretary of the Italy Cricket Board.
