A special operation conducted in the Northern waters by the Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Coast Guard on Monday led to the seizure of five Indian trawlers with 24 Indian fishermen on board, poaching in the waters off the Kovilan Lighthouse at Kareinagar in Jaffna.

The Sri Lanka Navy and Coast Guard remain ever alert to foil illegal fishing practices of foreign fishing trawlers in Sri Lanka’s waters and conduct regular patrols and operations.

As an extension of these efforts, the Northern Naval Command mounted a special operation on November 28 deploying Craft of the 04th Fast Attack Flotilla and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard attached to the Northern Naval Command, to chase away a cluster of trawlers poaching in Sri Lanka’s waters off the Kovilan Lighthouse, Kareinagar, Jaffna.

The seized trawlers together with 24 Indian fishermen were brought to the Kankesanthurai Harbour and they will be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for further legal proceedings.

Including the recent apprehension, the Navy has seized 35 Indian poaching trawlers and 252 Indian fishermen during operations conducted thus far in year 2022 and handed them over to the authorities for further legal action.

Illegal fishing practices of foreign fishermen in Sri Lanka’s waters deal a blow on the livelihood of local fishermen as well as the marine ecosystem functioning. Taking into account these conditions, Sri Lanka Navy continues to remain vigilant and conducts its operations to thwart such practices around the clock.
