New Zealand scored 155 for 2 wickets by close after bad light forced an early end to day one when just 48 overs were bowled in the second Test against Sri Lanka which commenced at Wellington yesterday.

Rain had delayed the start of the game and did not start until 2.10 pm (New Zealand time).

Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and decided to field first to get the advantage of overcast conditions on the first day with more seamers expecting a green wicket. However, Kiwis openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway made a solid start adding 87 runs in 25.1 overs. Latham was first to get out scoring 21 in 73 balls and the first breakthrough was made by paceman Kasun Rajitha while Prabath Jayasuriya took a simple catch at deep square leg. The stylish stroke maker Conway was leading the way to build up the innings with a fluent knock of 78 off 108 balls with 13 fours but was dismissed by Dhananjaya de Silva who took a sensational diving return catch.

The experienced Kane Williamson ( 26 in 73 balls with 3 fours) and Henry Nicholls( 18in 32 balls with a four) were at the wicket when the bad light stopped the day.

Sri Lanka made only one change with debutant wicket-keeper batter Nishan Madushka replacing out-of-form Niroshan Dickwella while New Zealand paceman Doug Bracewell had been added as a replacement for injured Neil Wagner which was the only change of the side.

The second day will resume at 3.30 am (Sri Lanka time).
