Bribery sleuths yesterday arrested the Secretary of the Suriyawewa Pradeshiya Sabha while accepting
gratification of Rs.50,000 from a contractor at the PS premises.
He was arrested on a complaint made by a contractor of the Suriyawewa Weekly fair. A person residing in Beragama, Ambalantota had acquired land where Suriyawewa weekly fairis held on lease basis for 2020 and 2021 in the name of his brother.
He has made a request to the PS secretary to recover a part of the deposit as it has not been possible to maintain the land following the Covid-19 situation in the country .
The PS secretary had demanded a bribe of Rs.100,000 to release the fund of Rs.2.4 million by a cheque. However the PS secretary has reduced the bribe to Rs.50,000 later. He was to be produced before the Hambantota Magistrate.
