Lasantha murder case makes headway: Intelligence officer arrested

A sergeant attached to the intelligence unit of the Sri Lanka Army was arrested on suspected involvement in the murder of former Editor-in-Chief of the Sunday Leader Lasantha Wickrematunge.

Police said the arrest came after recent appeals for public assistance in tracking down suspects.

Court granted the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) permission to detain and question the intelligence officer.

The former founding Editor of the oft-outspoken Sunday Leader was murdered in Attidiya on January 8, 2009, on his way to work.

Investigations yielded few results during succeeding governments, but were reopened after President Maithripala Sirisena came to power in January 2015.
