‘National Honours 2017’ in recognition of outstanding achievements

Ninety out of 426 applicants would be awarded by President Maithripala Sirisena under the ‘National Honours 2017’ for outstanding achievements of Sri Lankans or others in connection with Sri Lanka, Presidential Secretariat P. B. Abeykoon said.

National honours will be awarded for the service to the nation, bravery, scientific achievements, achievements in art, culture and cinema and for non-nationals, Abeykoon said.

The Presidential Secretariat also said the National honours 2017 is being organised after 12 years.

Addressing a media briefing at the Government’s Information Department yesterday, he said that the ‘National Awards 2017’ ceremony would be held on March 20 under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena at Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre from 6.00 p.m. onwards.

National honours will be conferred to both nationals and non-nationals. Sri Lankabhimanya will be the highest national honour awarded for exceptionally outstanding and most distinguished service to the nation while Deshamanya award will be bestowed for the highly meritorious services.

Deshabandu will be the third highest national honour for meritorious services and Sri Lanka Ranjana will be awarded for distinguished service of highly meritorious nature for non-nationals. Vidya Jothi, Kala Keerthi, Sri Lanka Shikhamani, Vidya Nidhi, Kala Shuri, Sri Lanka Thilaka and Weera Prathapa awards will also be bestowed.

Senior Additional Secretary to the President Rohana Dissanayake, Senior Presidential Advisor W.M. Karunarathna and Ministry of Parliamentary Reforms and Mass Media Secretary Nimal Bopage also participated.
