Carbide tank explosion, welder killed

A 65-year-old father of two injured in an explosion which occurred in a house at Kurikotuwa, Veyangoda succumbed to his injuries on admission to the Wathupitiwala hospital yesterday. He was identified as H.H. Richard Hemachandra a welder by profession.

Veyangoda Police said investigations revealed that the deceased Hemachandra had been engaged in some welding work opposite his house last morning when the Carbide tank suddenly exploded injuring him. Branches of nearby trees had broken due to the explosion and tank fragments were seen deposited on the roof of the house.

Investigations are continuing directed by the Veyangoda Police HQI Chandana Kumara under the inspection of SSP Muditha Pussella and ASP Samath Amarasinghe.
