Boy drowns in lake

A 15-year-old boy who went fishing in the Muriyakalla Lake in Galenbidunuwewa, drowned on Wednesday (7).

The incident took place at around 3 pm and the body was recovered after a search operation conducted by the police with the help of residents of the area.

The police said the deceased, Buddhika Pushpakumara, a resident of Yakalla, Muriyakadawela in Galenbidunuwewa was due to appear for the GCE (O/L) examination this year.

The boy’s father had died a few years ago after falling from a coconut tree and his mother is working in the Middle East as a housemaid, police said.

The postmortem was to be performed at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.

Galenbidunuwewa Police are investigating.
