A Sports Ombudsman Call Center to be established

The Sports Ministry will introduce a post of Sports Ombudsman by next week, Sports Minister Harin Fernando yesterday said.

The duty assigned to the post will be to mediate issues that any sportsman or sportswoman is facing in the country, the Minister said.

“My vision for 2019 is that there should be no sportsman or a sportswoman complaining that they do not have sports equipment or other facilities to continue with their training. We have seen on numerous occasions some sportsmen saying that they don’t even have a pair of shoes.

This Sports Ombudsman will be the one co-ordinating to find solutions for all these issues,” Minister Fernando explained.

The Sports Ombudsman shall give a full report to the Minister of Sports as to how he has handled the cases every Monday, Minister Fernando further said.

“Even though I have to look over three ministries, I will be available at the Sports Ministry on every Wednesday for three hours, along with the Ministry Secretary and other officials to meet anyone who needs our assistance and facilitation.”

Minister Fernando also said that the Sports Ministry together with Sri Lanka Telecom will establish a Call Center which will receive any complaints of hardships faced by the sportsmen/women.

The Call Center will consist of five people who will also be responsible for running an active website.

The Call Center will also receive sports corruption related information as well.

“We have requested for the hotline number 1978 for this call center. Hopefully we will be able to establish this Call Center in the next couple of weeks, the Minister said.
