Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) General Secretary Prof. Tissa Vitharana yesterday said that a US Naval camp is to be set up in Trincomalee, with the Trincomalee harbor as the focal point.

According to him, a bilateral agreement in this regard has already been signed between Sri Lanka and the USA.

He made this statement at a press conference at the party headquarters in Colombo yesterday.

“An American Naval camp is being established in Trincomalee and it is a huge threat to the country’s sovereignty,” he said.

Prof. Vitharana said the development rate has dropped to three per cent now, as the government has no proper mechanism to implement a production-based economy.

He accused the government of changing ‘Independence Day’ which has been held since 1948 to ‘National Day’. Neither ‘Republic Day’ nor ‘Independence Day’ is celebrated under this government, he said.

Sri Lanka is at 89th position of 180 countries as regards the Corruption Index and has obtained only 38 marks out of 100, Prof. Vitharana said.

“When forming this government, Sri Lanka was at the same position. There is no progress even though there was a huge cry about forming a corruption-free country. The members of the government levelled only allegations, but failed to take legal action against the malpractices or prove their claims,” he said.

The government is cheating people both in the North and the South by dealing with the topic of forming a new Constitution only at the surface, the LSSP General Secretary said.

Southern Provincial Councillor Ven. Baddegama Samitha Thera said the LSSP will take to the streets urging the government to hold Provincial Council Elections promptly.

“It is the responsibility of both the Election Commission Chairman and the government to hold PC Elections without any delay,” the Thera said.

The Thera added that the Election Commission Chairman should not resign and he should be a part of the pressure group which demands that the government hold PC Elections.

Speaking on school uniform voucher system, the Thera said the value of a voucher is not enough to have a school uniform.

“As earlier, uniform materials should be provided after cancelling the voucher system,” he said.
