Heroin haul of 100kg detected by Excise Officials

Excise Department officers arrested three for trafficking of heroin weighing over 100 kgs valued at Rs.1100 million during a raid conducted in Wellawatte and Piliyandala.

Excise Anti-narcotic branch OIC K.Pathirana told the Daily News that the officers initially arrested two individuals in Wellawatte for having 10kg of heroin which they had been transporting in their car.

Upon further interrogation, the suspects led the officers to a safe house in Madapatha, Piliyandala where nearly 100 kgs of heroin was being stocked.

“The chief occupant of the house, a resident of Piliyandala who was also aiding the supply of drugs was arrested,” he said. “We are conducting further investigations, after which these suspects would be produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate today.”

Deputy Excise Commissioner Kapila Kumarasinghe also revealed that the confiscated haul of heroin belonging to the brown sugar variety was valued at around Rs.1100 million.

Kumarasinghe said that the Excise Department was assisting the government’s anti-narcotic drive by delegating more than 100 excise officials along with the police and customs to eradicate the narcotic menace in the country.
