Motorcyclists carrying children without helmets nabbed

About 52 parents transporting their children to schools in Kurunegala on motorcycles without helmets were arrested by officers of the Kurunegala Police Traffic Division on February 16.

Thirteen women were among the arrested. The suspects have been advised on several occasions not to ride without helmets, police said. About 23 students in Kurunegala had died in road accidents last year and the Police, therefore, have intensified operations to nab motorcyclists who ride without helmets and 127 police officers have been deployed for the purpose, Kurunegala SSP Maihinda Dissanayake said.
