Case against former Kotte Mayor fixed for trial on May 27

The case filed against two persons including former Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte Mayor Janaka Ranawaka under the Computer Crimes Act was yesterday fixed for trial on May 27 by the Colombo High Court.

In this case, the Attorney General (AG) had filed indictments against the accused Janaka Ranawaka, former Mayor of the Kotte Municipal Council and Lasantha Roshan, a computer operator, for intentionally securing unauthorised access to former Kotte Deputy Mayor Madura Vithana’s computer data in July 2013.

The AG had filed indictments before the Colombo High Court against the two accused under Section 3 of the Computer Crimes Act No. 24 of 2007.

When the matter came up before Colombo High Court Judge Manjula Tillekaratne, the prosecution sought a trial date since its prosecuting officer is abroad.

The defence informed court that they expect to raise preliminary objections against the indictments.

The case was fixed for trial on May 27 and the first witness was advised to appear before court.
