New map of Sri Lanka by month's end

The Survey Department will launch a new map of Sri Lanka by the month's end. This is due to the changes of shape shorelines due to projects that had been carried out during the past five years.

Surveyor-General P.M.P. Udayakumara said that the Survey Department had recently completed making the new map of the island.

The Colombo Port City Project, Hambantota Port Project, the Moragahakanda Reservoir Project, the construction of highways, as well as other development projects were the reasons for the changes, he said.

Udayakumara said that while the old map was created with the help of aerial photographs, the new map was created with the use of satellite imaging.
