Nine Iranians arrested with heroin stock remanded till April 11

The Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne yesterday ordered to remand nine Iranian nationals who were arrested over a stock of 100 kg of heroin worth over Rs.1 billion in the seas off the Southern Coast till April 11.

The Magistrate issued an order directing the Translating Officer of the Embassy of Iran to appear before the next calling date.

"A stock of over 100 kg of heroin worth over Rs.1 billion was seized from the trawler and it is believed that another stock of 500 kg of heroin were dumped in sea before the officers raided the trawler," Police Narcotics Bureau sources said.

On a previous occasion, they concluded the investigation regarding the trawler docked at the Colombo Harbour. The Magistrate issued an order directing the North Commandant of the Navy to keep the trawler at the Trincomalee Harbour.

The sources said they will take steps record further statements from the suspects.
