Doctor shortage at Galgamuwa Base Hospital

The members of the Hospital Development Society of the Galgamuwa Government Base Hospital in Kurunegala say that there is a severe shortage of doctors at present, inconveniencing patients of the Kurunegala District who attend this hospital. Only 22 doctors are now available to treat patients though there should be at least 40 doctors at this hospital to cover up normal duties. Nearly 600 patients attend this hospital daily.

This hospital was vested with the public on July 20, 2017, after being modernized at a cost of Rs. 1,050 million. About 410 beds are available for residential patients in this hospital. There should be at least seven specialist doctors in this hospital, but there are only three. When inquired, North-Western Province Director of Health Services Dr. N. Fareed told the media that this shortage of doctors would be solved in a month as this matter has already been directed to the Health Ministry.
