Power Minister urged to keep “lights on” at tourist hotels

Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has appealed to the Power Minister Dullas Alahapperuma to intervene into several incidents in which the tourist hotel operators complained that their power supply had been disconnected despite the government’s decision not to do so with the tourist hotels.

Despite the Government’s appeal not to disconnect the power supply of tourists hotels which have been given a grace period to pay their electricity bills, there have been reports that some regional CEB officials were taking steps to discontinue the power supply to such hotels.

Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga appealed to Power Minister Dullas Alahapperuma to intervene in this matter and bring such actions to a standstill.

The Government has given the concessionary grace period for tourists hotels to pay their electricity bills for one year which has again been extended by another six months due to the COVID 19 pandemic. It is at such a time when the government is considering extending this facility, that some regional CEB officials have discontinued the power supply to some tourist hotels.

Minister Ranatunga said that such decisions would worsen the tourism industry that has been affected severely due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
