Former Governor of Western Province Azath Salley has been arrested this evening by the Criminal Investigation Department. He was arrested on the directions of Attorney General Dappula de Livera over a controversial statement made by him.

The CID arrested former Western Province Governor Azath Salley over a controversial statement made by him yesterday.
The Attorney General’s Coordinating Officer, State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said the Attorney General had advised the DIG CID that credible information has been disclosed of offenses committed under the Penal Code, Prevention of Terrorism Act and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) Act by Azath Salley by a speech made by him on March 10.
Recently, Salley had allegedly said that he does not respect the law of the land but only respects and welcomes the Muslim Sharia Law.
