Five hundred and forty persons have died in road accidents during the past three months, a senior police officer in Kurunegala told the media yesterday. Moreover, around 35 people get injured in road accidents per day, he added.
The Police Department has launched a project to arrest drunk and reckless drivers during the next couple of weeks as the Sinhala and Tamil Year draws near, the officer said.
He added that around 8,500 police personnel have been deployed for the purpose.
