A total of 745 persons were arrested in police operations carried out yesterday for not wearing face masks and failing to maintain social distancing, said the Police Media Spokesperson Ajith Rohana. This is the highest number of quarantine law violators arrested within a period of 24-hours.

Police on Monday arrested 745 persons for violating quarantine regulations like wearing face masks and maintaining social distance, Police Media Spokesperson DIG Ajith Rohana stated.
He said it was the highest number of arrests made in a single day since Police began operations to nab quarantine law violators on October 30, 2020.
He said 13,493 people had been arrested so far for violating quarantine regulations. DIG also stated that a special drone operation was conducted in Colombo-North and Central-Colombo on Monday, and that 12 people were arrested on offences related to quarantine rules and regulations by monitoring from drones.
He also noted that 81 three-wheelers were taken into police custody during a special operation conducted in the Western Province on Monday. They had been operating disregarding travel restrictions. The DIG said they will be produced before the respective Magistrates’ Courts.
About 106 passengers, who were on board three-wheelers, had also been taken into police custody under the quarantine rules and regulations and they were also to be produced before the respective Magistrates’ Courts.
DIG Rohana said vehicles will not be allowed on roads for shopping purposes when travel restrictions are eased. “Those who need to buy essential items could visit the nearest outlet. Only one member of the family can go out,” he said.
“Persons with disabilities can inform the nearest police station and then the police will provide necessary arrangements,” DIG Ajith Rohana added.
He said they have deployed a large number of police officers in order to monitor the situation. The DIG requested the people’s support and cooperation to control the COVID-19 pandemic.
