Large provincial drinking water projects expedited

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) has accelerated the construction of several large water supply projects in the North Central, North Western, Central, Uva and the Southern Provinces.

NWSDB Chairman Nishantha Ranatunga said that priority has been given to supply drinking water to the North Central Province because of its growing number of kidney patients.

Therefore, the work on three large water projects in Anuradhapura North and Thambutthegama in the Mahaweli 'H' area has been accelerated for the benefit of 400,000 people in the areas.

The work on the Kelani River South Bank Water Project also began recently to provide drinking water for 120,000 families in the two districts at a cost of Rs. 32,700 million.

Another project is in progress to supply drinking water for the North. Under this project, a sea water desalination plant will also be built in Jaffna.

A French company will start the project at a cost of 50 million Euros before the end of this year
