CAA seizes 4,200 oximeters at BIA

The Customs officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake seized 4,200 Oximetres and arrested a suspect at the air cargo terminal as the stock had been smuggled in using forged documents.

The stock had been brought in without obtaining approval from the relevant institutions. The suspect had produced forged documents to the SriLankan Cargo officers to clear the oximeters packed in 21 boxes.

The Customs said the value of the shipment was estimated at Rs. 2.3million. The suspect, who appeared as a clearing agent, was arrested on Monday and remanded till September 21 when produced before the Negombo Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The Customs officials intercepted the shipment at the exit point and found that it was being cleared without submitting the Customs Declaration and the payment of applicable taxes to the Customs. The stock also lacked the approval of the National Medicines Regulatory Authority.

The officers of the Sri Customs Preventive Division at Katunayake are conducting investigations.
