“Hope for Youth” programme to be implemented

The Ministry of Youth and Sports has decided to implement a national youth programme called “Hope for Youth” to address the challenges and aspirations of youth to actively involve the young people in the country’s development process.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department, Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma

 said that the main objective of this programme is to reduce the youth unemployment rate from the current 28 per cent to 12 per cent.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal tabled by Youth and Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa to replace the “Yowunpuraya” programme which was implemented until 2019 with the “Hope for Youth” programme which will be implemented from 2021 targeting all Divisional Secretariats through the National Youth Services Council (NYSC).

According to the Minister, the total youth population of Sri Lanka between the ages of 15-29 is 23.2 per cent of the country’s population which numerically is around 5.6 million.
