Exploration and production of natural gas in Mannar Cauvery and Eastern blocks in Sri Lanka would generate potential opportunities for the offshore sector in Sri Lanka.

“Proposed LNG related floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) in the Colombo Harbour with underwater pipelines will demand many competitions in the sector,” Indrajith Nissanaka Senior Lecturer-Department of Mechanical Engineering -the University of Moratuwa and Chairman of Subcommittee on Skill Development in Maritime and Offshore sector under the Sri Lanka Export Development Board said.

“Looking at the future, hot and cold oil rig floating supply and offloading (FPSO) layup facilities ongoing in Trincomalee and Hambantota could be built up to a world-class provider.”

Addressing a webinar organized by Sub Committee on Skill Development in Maritime and Offshore sector under the Sri Lanka Export Development Board and the theme ‘Paradigm Shift of Marine and Offshore industry of Sri Lanka by Improving Skill Capacities’, he said that the development of offshore wind farms, prospective development of offshore wave energy will open new possibilities and ocean resource development and developing a blue ocean economy will require more capacity development in this sector.

“We have an industry which is capable of handling almost all the services related to the maritime industry. However, we still need to develop the skills and capacities of potential workers,” he added.
