The non-academic staff member and the former principal of Mahinda College, who had been remanded for allegedly preparing fraudulent documents and allegedly embezzling Rs.2,156,200 from the School Development Society funds were released on cash bail of Rs.25,000 and a surety of Rs.one million each by Galle Chief Magistrate Harshna Kekunawela when they were produced before him yesterday.
The Magistrate also barred the suspects from travelling abroad and ordered them to report to the Special Fraud Investigation Division of the Galle Police on the last Sunday of every month.
The suspects, Hasini Manoji Alahakoon, a non-academic staff member and Gamage Gamini Jayawardena, former Principal were released on bail.
When the case was taken up yesterday, the Police submitted that they had handed over 34 fraudulent cheques to be sent to the Government Analyst, adding that investigations were not yet complete and statements from three other persons were yet to be recorded.
Counsel for the first respondent said that his client’s husband is abroad and has a son to be admitted to Grade 1 of the school this year. He said that she had to go for the child’s interviews and that she had not hindered the respective investigations and therefore asked for bail on reasonable humanitarian grounds.
Counsel for the former Principal stated that the prosecution had not presented sufficient evidence to deny bail. He said his client would not interfere with the ongoing investigations and therefore asked for bail under any condition.
The incumbent Principal of the school had lodged a complaint with the Galle Police Special Fraud Investigation Division on October 26 stating that the suspect had allegedly swindled Rs.2,156,200 from the School Development Society’s account between 2018 and 2020.
After considering the facts submitted by both parties, the Magistrate ordered bail for the suspects.
The first suspect was represented by Attorneys-at-Law Ajith Kumara and Prasantha de Silva while the second suspect was represented by President’s Counsel Kalinga Indratissa and Senior Counsels Pradip Madanayake, Nimal Walakulaarachchi, Parami Jayanetti, Dasun Tharanga and Yasaswin Godakanda.
