Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Thilan Samaraweera has been named Assistant Coach of Australia A team which arrived in Sri Lanka last Saturday morning for the two ODIs and two four-day games against Sri Lanka A.
The 44-year-old stylish right-hander Samaraweera who played 81 test matches and 53 ODIs for the National team was a prolific run-getter for the Sri Lanka team scoring 5462 runs with 14 centuries. After retiring from International cricket Samaraweera migrated to Melbourne and completed his coaching qualification. Presently, he is a qualified level three coach. Having early experience as a National cricketer Samaraweera presently works with Victoria cricket. He also doing duty as a coach in Melbourne private school but he is committed to
Victoria cricket as well as Australia Cricket despite his busy schedule. He was a one-time Assistant coach to Bangladesh's former National head coach Chandika Hathurusinghe and both of them guided the Sri Lanka National team later.
Cricket Australia obtained the services of Thilan Samaraweera, especially when playing against Asian countries in the sub-continent. Samaraweera a product of Ananda College is also the batting specialist coach for the Australian team in the sub-continent.
Meanwhile, Cricket Australia has named Andre Borovec as head coach of the Australia A team during the Sri Lanka tour. He has been an assistant coach with Victoria State since 2018, overseeing a successful era for the Victorian Men’s Team. Over this period Victoria won the Sheffield Shield and One-Day Cup competitions.
Success also came for Borovec with the Melbourne Renegades, where he was an Assistant Coach during their championship-winning BBL|08 campaign. Australia A team comprising 20 members arrived yesterday morning and they are accommodated at Cinnamon Lake Hotel.
Meanwhile Australia’s cricket head coach, Andrew McDonald has been forced to miss the start of the Sri Lanka series after testing positive for COVID-19.
The 40-year-old, who tested positive for the virus a day before Australia's T20 squad's departure to Sri Lanka on Wednesday will be isolated for a week in Melbourne and is likely to link up with the team in Colombo ahead of the second T20 on June 8.
