A woman who allegedly murdered her nine-month-old son was remanded by the Matara Chief Magistrate Isuru Neththi Kumara on Sunday (19).

R.P. Lalani Dilrukshi (22) of Kandahena, Elgiriya, Thelijjavila was remanded for the alleged murder of W.A. Salindu Prabath on June 15. The mother fled after the incident and was arrested in Godakawela in Ratnapura by Godakawela Police and was handed over to the Malimbada Police.

The Court also ordered the prison authorities to have a psychiatrist examine the suspect and submit a report to Court.

It transpires that the child had been sleeping with his elder brother who is two years old, at their residence in Ellagiriya.

The father who was a labourer had been out. When the neighbours heard the elder son crying and looking for his mother, they had gone over to the house, only to find the baby injured. The child was rushed to the Akuressa Hospital but was pronounced dead on admission.

The suspect had written a letter to her husband before her departure as well. Malimbada Police are conducting investigations further.
