Missing boy found on Avissawella bound train

The Police had found the boy that was reported missing from Kandy, on a train bound for Avissawella. The child had reportedly come to watch the Dalada Perahera in Kandy with his mother. Police also arrested a suspicious person who had abducted the boy.

The child and the suspicious person were taken into Police custody on Thursday night (04) on a train heading to Avissawella.

The 9-year-old boy residing in the Mailapitiya Talatuoya area was abducted by a 30-year-old resident of Peradeniya.

The parents of the child had notified the Police regarding the disappearance of the child. A journalist travelling on the train had noticed the frightened child and the suspicious looking character and had notified the Police. The Police had intercepted the train at Maharagama, arrested the suspect and had taken the child into their custody. Upon questioning, the suspect had told the Police that he had brought the child to Colombo to get him costumes for the perahera and to also buy him toys. Issuing a statement, the Police Media Division said that criminals could persuade children by using various methods to wean them away abduct them with various intentions. The Police said that this had been observed through various incidents. Therefore, the Police warn parents to be extra vigilant about their children especially during festive occasions and when in crowded places.

They also urge parents to educate children of the imminent dangers posed by such characters for their own safety.
