Sri Lanka now the safest tourist destination - Dr. Bandula

Sri Lanka is now the safest tourist destination as things get back to normal after the recent political crisis in the island nation, Transport and Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardene said on Saturday in an interview with Russian media. The country is politically stable and a hundred percent safe now since there have been several political protests over the past few months. There were mass demonstrations over the economic crisis and they have ended now with the former President tendering his resignation. The former Prime Minister was elected by the majority vote of the Members of Parliament. The President had certified the security of this country which is now calm and peaceful. So we invite tourists to come to Sri Lanka as there is a safe and stable environment in the country as tourism is a key sphere for Sri Lanka.

The Minister further said the arrest of the Russian Aeroflot plane in Sri Lanka was a terrible mistake. We apologize for what happened,” Gunawardena said, commenting on the arrest of an Aeroflot plane in Sri Lanka on June 2.

However, he said that problem has been solved now, and the President, the Prime Minister, and the entire Government of Sri Lanka guarantees that this will never happen again. We do not want to arrest any aircraft in Sri Lanka,” Gunawardena said.

Meanwhile, he further said that the discussion is underway between the Central Banks in both Russia and Sri Lanka on the possibility of joining the Russian payment system MIR.

It is necessary to go for an easy payment scheme and our embassy is engaged in negotiations with relevant parties to succeed in that. We can implement that after the Central Bank’s approval is obtained.” Gunawardena said when asked whether the Mir payment system would be launched in Sri Lanka.

He noted that the Sri Lankan authorities would like Russian tourists to be able to pay by card while visiting the country.
