The Urban Development and Housing Ministry has decided to develop the city of Kadawatha as a multimodal transport hub which will be a key component to connect all major public transport modes including three major Expressways of Southern, Katunayake, and Central.

Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunga yesterday instructed the relevant officials to take the necessary steps to commission the Kadawatha Multimodal Transport Hub soon, which has been completed under the project.

All the Expressways built in the country so far connect to each other in Kadawata city. Therefore, passengers will be able to travel to different parts of the island using this multi-model transport hub.The Government has so far spent Rs.377 million for the construction of this Multi-Modal Transport Center.

The construction work has started in 2019 and the hub will shortly be commissioned. It has been built on land belonging to the Urban Development Authority.

A bus terminal that has the space of parking around 25 buses has also been built here.In addition, a car park where office vehicles can be parked and a modern cafeteria have been constructed. A tunnel has also been built here and 18 shops have been built on both sides.

The opening of this Multi-Modal Transport Center was delayed for over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the country’s current economic situation. Considering the grievances faced by the public and bus owners due to the non-opening of the Kadawatha Multimodal Transport Center with modern facilities for many months, the Minister instructed the officials to take the necessary steps to make this Multi-Modal Transport Hub available to the people as soon as possible.
