Ranithma excels on opening day

The promising shuttler Ranithma Liyanage of Chirst Church College Baddegama reached the third round as she beat Ashokkumar Plashiya without much effort 21/0, 21/1 at the girls under 17 singles event of the National Badminton championship which commenced yesterday at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium.

Ranithma the 16-year defending under 15 champion and last year’s Open women’s semi finalists made it easy to reach third round while L.A Dinethya beat Navithya Dihini 21/7, 21/6 to enter the round three. Komuthu Kumarapperuma had a win over Dinumi Cordon (21/12, 21/10), Rukshika Baskaran defeated Yasasi Himaya 21/16, 21/13 were other two key games at this age group. The tournament which conducted by Sri Lanka Badminton will continue until January 22.

Former Pakistan National champion Wajid Ali Chaudhry, who is the Chairman of Badminton Asia Development Committee attended the opening ceremony as the chief guest yesterday while Sri Lanka Badminton President Rohan de Silva, National Sports Science (NSSI) Director Sajith Jayalal were among the other invitees.
