Cabinet never ordered to stop accepting poll deposits - PM

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena told Parliament yesterday (17) that the Cabinet did not take a decision to stop accepting deposits from candidates for the Local Government Election. PM Gunawardena noted that Cabinet never took such a decision and any claims stating otherwise are false.

The Premier noted that, as the Public Administration Minister, he never gave such an order. National People’s Power (NPP) MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake questioned if it means that the Cabinet Secretary has conveyed a wrong message to the Public Administration Ministry Secretary.

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa questioned what action would be taken against the Public Administration Ministry Secretary, if he was found at fault for issuing such an order.

The Prime Minister noted that the Public Administration Ministry Secretary withdrew his order on the same day and said there had been similar incidents where Ministry Secretaries withdrew orders made earlier on.
