State servants should pay more attention to learning English as it will be an added qualification and advantage to their career developments and help them reach higher positions in their career, Sabaragamuwa Governor Tikiri Kobbekaduwa said. He said so at the commencement of an English Training Course for the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Government employees recently at the Pussella Management Development Training Centre.

The Government employees can take part in the English language training course, which is organised by the Management Development and Training Unit of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council free of charge.

The course is conducted by Governor's Private Secretary Manjula Indigahawela as the resource person. Governor Kobbekaduwa said that priority should be given through training courses to teach English language, which opens doors to the international community.

The usage of the English language at home will help improve the language fast for everyone, especially for children.

He also mentioned that it is more appropriate to try to use the English language intermittently before using it proficiently.

“Some people are not using English because of fear and shame. But it is important to use the language as much as possible since the more you use the more you gain”, he noted. The Provincial Governor also said that it is important to implement an English language day in Government institutions at least once a month and to exchange ideas between the officials of that Government institution only in English," Governor Kobbekaduwa said.

The Governor further said that due to some decisions made in the past, the English language, which was an international language, was far away from Sri Lankans.

He pointed out that it is important to correct that mistake and provide opportunities for all Sri Lankans to practice English.Deputy Secretary (Training) Susila Rajapakse said that her Secretariat conducts about 70 different training courses for Government officials in the province every year. She added that she was able to choose Manjula Indigahawela, who possessed both local and foreign exposure in teaching English as a resource person for the English training course.
